Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to: Conduct a basic crisis risk and safety assessment. Apply a 'soft approach' crisis intervention model to stabilize clients. Describe and implement a 'warm handoff' referral. Description: This two-hour online course provides a structured, evidence-informed approach for responding to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants will discuss how to prepare for crisis situations, assess risk and ensure safety, and implement compassionate, client-centered intervention strategies. The course emphasizes preparedness, counselor self-regulation, and trauma-informed approaches—from initial contact to follow-up and referral. Content is informed by guidance from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and related best-practice literature.
