Service Description
Objectives To differentiate healing apologies from nonhelpful apologies To explore the anatomy of a healing apology To understand reconciliation as a process To illuminate the characteristics of criticism and vulnerability in the reconciliation process To recognize the importance and limitations of forgiveness Description Many of us work to help individuals repair and participate in reconciliation from the damage of addiction, family conflict, serious mental illness, and trauma. But what does a healing apology look like and what are the limitations we need to recognize? This course will explore the anatomy of a healing apology and develop skills to enter the reconciliation process with thoughtfulness and confidence. We will reflect on the work of Harriet Learner, Cloe Madeanes, Majorie Ingall, Susan McCarthy, and other apology researchers to look for the answers to these questions. The introduction to Learner’s book states, “The courage to apologize, and the wisdom to do it well, is at the heart of effective leadership, marriage, parenting, friendship, personal integrity and what we call love.” Participants will have the opportunity for both personal reflection and professional practice. This course provides 3 continuing education credits. Participants must attend the entire course to receive a certificate.
